David Katz
Executive Director, Smart Health
As Executive Director of Smart Health, David is responsible for defining and executing programs that utilize technology to expand access to the healthcare system, reduce costs, and improve outcomes.
David leverages his extensive experience as a senior executive and entrepreneur to define big visions and develop programs and products, and market solutions. He is an innovative change agent who conceives and manages complex alliances and coalitions that produce results. He has strong management skills and a history of developing projects that produce results.
David began his career as an educator, serving as a teacher in inner city schools in Chicago, and a school principal in the Ravenswood District in East Palo Alto, California. After receiving his MBA from Stanford, he joined Gillcable in San Jose as Vice President of Financial Services, pioneering pay-per-view marketing, by acquiring regional and national rights to events, building cooperative marketing programs and establishing national standards for event penetration.
In the early 1990s, David worked with then-San Jose Mayor Susan Hammer on the San Jose Education Network, which established a public-private partnership to network local schools. Ultimately linking up with the original Smart Valley, the project was successful in raising millions of dollars of cash and equipment and galvanizing thousands of volunteers to network hundreds of schools and train thousands of teachers in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties.
In 1996 he moved to 3Com where he led the company’s global marketing for education and health care, helping the company achieve leadership in both markets. He also served as Vice President of Strategic Alliances, building relationships that developed new call center, wireless and streaming media products, and heading a project that built the first outdoor stadium wireless network at Candlestick Park.
For the last three years David has been Executive Partner at EVista Consulting Group, providing Internet consulting services to small medical and legal offices.
David serves on the Board of Directors of The Health Trust, a public benefit corporation committed to improving the health and quality of life for people in need in Silicon Valley.
David has lived in Silicon Valley for 28 years with his wife Anne Moses, a consultant and former hospital administrator. They have three sons.
David has a BA from the University of Chicago, an MA from Stanford in Educational Administration and Policy Analysis, and an MBA from Stanford
